"The Light and Shadow of Christianshavn"
Christianshavn is one of Copenhagen's most unique districts built on wooden piles in what was once marshland, with a strong Dutch influence still visible today. It began as an independent town, designed as part of Copenhagen's fortifications and a hub for international trade, before later becoming part of the capital. This is the place where you can truly travel back in time and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of past centuries.

On this tour, you will:

  • Hear the story behind a beloved Danish bakery chain
  • Discover how one of Denmark’s most iconic drinks is made
  • Trace the history of a legendary shipyard
  • Meet a hero of the Danish navy whose image you’ve likely seen
  • Reflect on the work of Vilhelm Hammershøi, the "painter of silence"
  • Explore Denmark’s colonial past and the so-called "triangle of trade"
  • Find out where to try the best smørrebrød with a canal view
  • Hear stories of the Danish resistance movement
  • Spot one of the most unusual princesses in Danish history
  • Learn what inspired the architect of the district’s famous spiral tower
  • Walk along the former defensive ramparts
  • Stroll down a colorful street made famous by a classic TV series
  • Discover where members of the iconic band Gasolin once lived
  • See where one of the most remarkable ships in Christianshavn was once moored

This walk takes you along charming canals, where you’ll feel the maritime spirit, the energy of trade, and the romance of old Copenhagen.

Meeting point: by the BW-worker sculpture on the footbridge near Christianshavn metro station

End point: same location

Traveling in Copenhagen with Me
Our best tour ever! Svetlana, thank you for your passion for history. You shared the story of the Old Town so sincerely and lovingly that we could really feel its life across the centuries. We loved it and will definitely come back ❤️
When the tour of the courtyards smoothly turned into a gastronomic journey… Thanks to the food-focused tour, we discovered that in Copenhagen: ‘Danish' pastries are actually Vienna buns, there’s a herring buffet with 10 varieties and unlimited refills, organic street food is everywhere, bread has been baked since 1652 at Sankt Peders Bageri, and cheesecakes and éclairs perfectly fit into a royal guard-themed route accompanied by an orchestra.
Svetlana, thank you so much for such an engaging tour! For the warm and friendly atmosphere you create, for the chance to meet new and interesting people, and for the great idea of having lunch together after the tour. It felt like we were old friends, having fun and learning at the same time. Thank you, Svetlana, for being so sunny, kind, and wonderful!
Today I went on the ‘Stories of the Old Town' tour and had an absolutely amazing time! In just over two hours, Svetlana shared so many interesting stories about Copenhagen’s history, its residents, the royal family, and famous artists. I loved that the tour combined a broad overview with plenty of curious details that made the past come alive. I learned…
