If you’re spending a few days in Copenhagen, it’s well worth setting aside one day for a trip beyond the city. Here are my favorite destinations:
Helsingør and Kronborg Castle
Just 40 km north by train, this charming town is known for its 16th-century houses and Kronborg Castle immortalized by William Shakespeare in Hamlet. In summer, the castle hosts a theatre festival. Deep in its underground casemates, the legendary Holger the Dane lies sleeping. And if you hop on a ferry for just 15 minutes, you’ll find yourself in Sweden, in the picturesque seaside town of Helsingborg.
Hillerød and Frederiksborg Castle
Also located north of Copenhagen and easily reached by S-train, Hillerød is home to the stunning Frederiksborg Castle. With its beautiful gardens, it’s often called the "Scandinavian Versailles." The castle now houses the Museum of National History, featuring paintings, lavish interiors, and historical artifacts. The castle chapel also hosts organ concerts.
Roskilde, Denmark’s Ancient Capital
Only 20 minutes west by train, Roskilde offers a rich slice of Danish history. Visit the Viking Ship Museum, where in warmer months you can even sail on a reconstructed Viking ship. Don’t miss the 12th-century cathedral, the burial site of Danish monarchs. From the shore, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the fjord and it’s a perfect spot to grab a snack or an ice cream.
Dragør, A Quaint Fishing Village
Located south of Copenhagen and reachable by bus from the airport, Dragør feels like stepping back in time. Think sunlit yellow houses, blooming hollyhocks, and charming goose motifs painted on walls. Stroll through its narrow streets and visit the old fort, where you’ll find an unusual mermaid statue.
Malmø: A Danish Past, Swedish Present
Just across the Øresund Strait, Malmö has been part of Sweden since the 17th century. You can easily get there by train from Copenhagen Central Station. Buy tickets from Øresundstrafiken machines (there are discounts for groups of two or more). Explore the striking main library building, relax in the parks, browse numerous second-hand shops, and enjoy a wide variety of cafés and restaurants
Have a wonderful trip!
